Carly and Brian’s wedding was a non-stop throw down from start to finish, from champagne and pizza while getting ready to champagne mixing during the ceremony to the champagne during the reception… perhaps you are picking up on a theme, this couple loves them some champagne and who can complain about that! It was amazing watching across the sound as a large storm produced lightning and rain miles away while we stayed high and dry down in Manteo, NC. Absolutely killer wedding and epic couple!

Brittany and Brandon had an absolutely gorgeous day for a Founders Inn and Spa wedding, out in front of the fountain. Brandon looked very dashing in his navy uniform and Brittany was simply stunning in her gown.  Brittany put together a lovely country chic theme for their wedding and I thought the purple uplights really made the room at The Founders pop.

This adorable and quirky couple had one of the most unique weddings of the year! Have you ever been to a wedding where the ring bearer was a ring bear shark, a friend dressed in a bear costume, with a shark with the ring tied to its mouth, I now have. Becky and Travis are also two very well read individuals and it truly showed in the decor that Becky created mostly by herself, she created the banner that hung behind with during their ceremony, the stacks of books on the tables and they really clever place cards made from date due slips from library books.

When my dear friend Rhett asked me if I would fly back to Australia in October of 2016 to photograph his wedding I was beyond honored. Of course, I said yes and in late September I traveled back to Australia for two weeks of catching up with Rhett, meeting his beautiful (now) wife Aun and her wonderful family. By the time Rhett and Aun’s wedding came around I truly felt like I was family and not just their wedding photographer. We traveled all around Victoria, Australia to photograph some wonderful engagement images in gardens and boutique hotels (check it out).

Their wedding was truly stunning and truly a great time. Their reception venue was very appropriately called Vue De Monde, trust me the view was jaw dropping.  I was a very very lucky guy to spend a week as a Melbourne Wedding Photographer and would happily brave that 16-hour flight to do it all over again!

Back in October a team of the most Rockstar wedding vendors in Hampton Roads came together on The American Rover to produce one amazing editorial shoot for House of Maya presents The Wedding Planner of Hampton Roads and Tidewater. I was so very honored to be selected as the photographer for this shoot on The Rover and then I was absolutely blown away when I was informed that an image from my shoot was selected for the cover of the magazine. Below are the images that were run in the magazine, and then a few more images that I really enjoyed that did not make it in the magazine. Enjoy – Bryan

108 Budleigh Wedding

Emma and Mitch’s wedding was perfect from start to finish. This adorably cute couple was married at 108 Budleigh down in Manteo, NC. The details in this wedding were perfect, I loved all of the greenery and the rosemary made everything smell so good, all of the florals were from Coastal Blooms Florist. The day was coordinated by Beth at Engaging Events and catered by Kelly’s Outer Banks Restaurant & Tavern. Emma’s dress came from Nordstrom and it was gorgeous! Congratulations again you two!

I loved everything about Danielle and Ryan’s Cleveland, OH wedding, this couple was the sweetest, most hospitable, fun-loving couple ever! Their friends and family were all amazing, they partied hard, rocked out until Midnight!

Danielle was simply stunning in her gown by Brides by Demetrios in Cleveland, gorgeous flowers from Bouquets by Becky. Julie Elizabeth Event Styling transformed the tent at Quail Hollow Resort into every bride’s dream come true. Cakes to You made a classic beauty of a delicious wedding cake. Jesse Webb Entertainment provided music for the packed out dance floor as well as the photobooth.

Danielle, Ryan, their bridal party and I got to tour around Downtown Cleveland making epic images and having a blast on a party bus provided by Shima Limousine

Huge thank you to Danielle and Ryan for having me up to Cleveland to photograph their rowdy, awesome, and beautiful wedding day.

Shifting Sands Virginia Beach, VA Wedding

Kristina and James were wed on the most gorgeous day to have a beach wedding we have had this whole year in Virginia Beach. They had a lovely intimate wedding surrounded by friends and family at Shifting Sands. Kristina looked absolutely stunning her gown from Maya Couture, have you seen the back of the dress yet! The flowers were gorgeous and were done by a former florist friend of Kristina’s. Cake Delights provided some seriously delicious cupcakes, boy were they goooood! They had a blast dancing the night away with DJ Rodney Charles from Astro DJs. When the night was over they ran thru a tunnel of twirling glow sticks! How awesome is that!

James was surprised by a good friend of his with an old southern wedding tradition; where you bury a bottle of bourbon upside down at the location of the ceremony and then you dig it up afterwards, they say you will have beautiful weather, and that sure did hold true for Kristina and James! Congratulations you two crazy kids! I sure am one lucky Virginia Wedding Photographer!

Kaitlyn and Jesse are one of the most absolutely adorable couples I have had the pleasure of photographing. They are getting married in 2017 and have picked the gorgeous Vintager Inn as their venue and in my opinion, they have made a great choice. Kaitlyn and Jesse decided to have their engagement session photographed at the Vintager Inn as well, so they will have some awesome before and after photographs. Just check out those shiny, smiling, and bearded faces, clearly in love!

Who wouldn’t want to get married at a beautiful home in the mountains outside of Asheville, NC? Katie and Jesse met while they were both working in Australia and fell immediately in love, they brought their love back to the States and settled into the beautiful mountain-esque town of Asheville, North Carolina.

Jesse had surprised Katie by finding a very rare and sought after bottle of wine from Penfold’s an Australian wine maker so of course we used it in many of the images (I had a sip, it was delicious!)
They found a gorgeous venue in the nearby town of Weaverville, the property is called Deer Creek Run and it was stunning, the winter sunlight filtered through the trees at sunset and let us captures the perfect wedding images.

Katie, Jesse, and their families poured their talents into getting everything ready for the wedding, Katie’s mother made her dress, Katie herself arranged the flowers on the deck for the ceremony, and Katie and Jesse made their own wedding favors, the beautiful hand-thrown pottery.

The food was catered by the Corner Kitchen Catering, Katie’s bouquet and the boutonnieres were arranged by Brown’s Wedding Designs, and the tent and furnishings were brought in by Classic Event Rentals.

Jamie was one of my very first Brides and is one of my dearest friends. I was thrilled when I found out that she and her husband Austin, one of my best friends were having their first child. I was absolutely over the moon when Jamie asked if I would take her maternity portraits, saying she didn’t feel comfortable with anyone else taking them.

After she shared her Pinterest boards with me, I knew exactly where we should take her photos, oddly enough it was the same place we had done her and Austin’s engagement portraits, talk about coming full circle! Jamie and I had the absolute most perfect evening for this session, the light was gorgeous, there was a light breeze blowing Jamie’s hair majestically and the sunset was holy geez glorious! Just look at these images!

Call me crazy.  Insane, really.  We’re cramming a couple suitcases full of hiking boots, 3 seasons worth of layers, toiletries and camping gear for our 9 day, “roughing-it,” camper-van (Happy Campers) excursion around Iceland….and somehow come up with the idea to stuff my wedding gown in the checked bag, too?  I know, it’s nuts.  But when your wedding dress has to get ditched after the first 45 minutes of your reception because it has become too caked with mud to trudge around in for the rest of the night, it makes you do irrational things.

The thought of a few more pictures in my favorite dress I’ve ever bought in my life, in a breathtaking, intimate setting, taken by own amazing husband….how could I pass up the opportunity?  So cram it went, into the suitcase (rest easy ladies, the two separate layers of slip and lace folded very nicely, and traveled even better than I thought they would), along with some new make up at the suggestion of beauty guru (and our new neighbor!) Liz Alfier.  Liz was all too kind to give me a crash course in “how to make your face look halfway decent in the back of a camper-van” a few days before our departure.  The look on her face when I had to break it to her that I couldn’t pack a hair dryer, since American and European voltages don’t play nice together?  Priceless.  However, she quickly imparted some wisdom on the only real option of dealing with my wet hair (which doesn’t dry so pretty au-naturale) and no blow dryer in sight: braiding a few different sections and letting it dry, then ending up with fun, voluminous waves.  Sounds easy, right?  Enter a girl who can hardly braid her own hair to save her life, and a husband tasked with braiding the back of the head (y’all, hysterical, I tell you)….let’s just say we made the best of it.

Bryan and I decided to take some photos in two different areas in Iceland, which meant two different sessions of doing make up, dealing with my hair and getting into my dress, all in the back of our beloved Happy Camper.  Was it cold?  Yes.  Were there moments I was frustrated?  Yes (read: completing the last step in my new make up routine, so excited to put my dress on for the first time since my wedding day, and rain drops start to hit the windshield.  Or my “rustic bouquet of wildflowers that will be so beautiful!” wilting almost immediately after being picked).  But was it worth it?  Hell yes!  Despite the obstacles and forty-degree weather – which sounds a lot colder in Celsius: nine degrees! – I had so much fun playing model in front of my husband’s lens.  I now have beautiful photographs to treasure forever, not just as memories of my wedding gown, but of a truly incredible adventure to Iceland….made all the more special because they were shot by my better half.

My dress made it back in one piece (well, two pieces, I should say, but it started that way), and you know what?  I may just wear it again sometime soon.  Our muddy wedding day and packing it in a suitcase made me realize that just because that gown is the most expensive thing in my closet, doesn’t mean it wants to get left out of all the fun.

Island1580

Call me crazy. Passionate perhaps. What photographer wouldn’t jump at the chance to do a photo shoot in an idyllic setting like Iceland? To photograph my own wife in her wedding gown (especially since the rain on our wedding day kept her from wearing it all night), at that. I was already packing a ton of camera gear, so why not bring along her beautiful dress from Maya Couture?  (I in fact have to give a bit of credit for the idea to Misty, Staci, and Maya at House of Maya).  However, I didn’t exactly anticipate the setbacks that would happen along the way to produce the images you will see below.

Sometimes you feel that everything that can go wrong, is in fact going wrong – and at the worst possible time. Our first full day in Iceland was going to be the first of two photo shoot evenings. We had scouted out the perfect setting near a waterfall (not a difficult feat in Iceland) with a beautiful hilly backdrop. We set off to see some other sights while the sun was at its peak in the sky, opting instead to wait for the subtle evening Icelandic light. That’s when it all went downhill.  While visiting the majestic Seljalandsfoss waterfall, my camera slipped off its mount on the tripod and went crashing to the ground! Upon further inspection, a few tears, some rage, disbelief, and disappointment I realized the camera would no longer be functional. I had packed my digital camera, two film cameras and a GoPro, but it never crossed my mind to bring a backup digital camera body (I will now never go on another trip without a backup digital!)

After talking things through with Courtney, we decided that since we had some flex time in our itinerary, we could haul back to the capital city of Reykjavik the next day and buy a cheap Nikon digital SLR to hold me over until we got home.  This would enable me to still do a couple photo sessions of Courtney in her gown, and of course be able to document all of the amazing landscapes we knew we would encounter on the rest of our trip. So, that is exactly what we did – a turn and burn 6 hour round trip. We were back to our perfect waterfall setting just in time for the right light to be setting, but by the time Courtney was hair and makeup ready, so was mother nature! Que fog, clouds, and heavy rain…and more frustration.  We were able to shoot her for about 10 minutes before it began to deluge, and had to book it back to the van. This is when it pays to be cool, calm, and collected….which admittedly I was not. Fortunately Courtney was though, and suggested we drive further down the road to see what we could find. That is exactly what we did and we discovered amazing locations, as well as clearer skies.

Luckily for my mood, temperament and Courtney’s sanity (not having to deal with an unhappy Bryan), the second day we decided to shoot her in her gown (a few days later in our trip), we had a beautiful evening, free of rain, and a breathtaking sunset….we couldn’t ask for much more.

Despite the ups and downs, we were able to create these stunning images of my wife that we will both cherish forever. Iceland was a dream come true, just like having my beautiful bride in front of my camera. I think we may have to take her gown and do bridals in every country we visit from here on out. What do you say Court?

-Bryan

Jamie asked me to be her maternity photographer and I was very touched because we have been friends for a very long time and I also photographed her wedding, her maternity session was only the second maternity session I had ever photographed but I would say we knocked it out of the park, this is one beautiful Momma to be.

Before Jasmine’s dream wedding day (which she won for free, check it out here) we got together for a Bridal session and man was she stunning in her dress from Here and Now Bridal and her make up and hair was near flawless thanks to Kim Wadsworth of Bridesmade. We walked around downtown Norfolk, Va and captures some stunning images.

Megan first approached me with the idea of a little Mommy-Daughter photo session. She wanted floral crowns, white dresses, and golden sunshine filter through the trees and we certainly check all of those boxes and got heart meltingly cute images of her and her Blakely later in the evening Blakely’s Dad and half brother joined us we captured all of the family fun!

It is always a huge honor to me when people who I have gone to school with entrust me with photographing their most precious of moments. Barry contacted me because he wanted to surprise his wife, mother, and mother in law with a family photo session. The surprise went off with out a hitch and we captured some memories I know they will cherish for a lifetime.
